Access Health CT Announces Applications are Open for 2026 Broker Academy Program

The training program expands diversity in the broker community and builds resources and trust in historically hard-to-reach communities

HARTFORD, Conn. (March 2, 2026) — Access Health CT (AHCT), Connecticut’s official health insurance marketplace, today announced that applications are open for the 2026 Broker Academy Program. Click here for the application. The deadline to apply is March 31.

The Broker Academy is a free program which recruits and trains individuals from hard-to-reach communities in Connecticut to become licensed health insurance brokers. The program aims to diversify the field and create trusted community resources for people living in areas with high uninsured rates.

The Broker Academy, now in its fifth year, has added 100 new brokers to the field who are working in communities across the state, making it easier for all Connecticut residents to get the information and help they need to enroll in health and dental coverage.

Nearly half of AHCT’s customers worked with a broker during the recent Open Enrollment Period. During a time when changes to federal law made enrolling in coverage more complex, brokers were able to help their clients navigate the changes, compare plans and enroll in health and dental coverage that best fit their needs. There is no cost for this assistance.

The Broker Academy Program provides free training for individuals to become licensed, certified health insurance brokers, while empowering participants to help advance AHCT’s mission to decrease the number of uninsured residents and reduce health disparities.

The Program also includes in-person exam prep classes and support to pass the state licensing exam. After passing the exam, students participate in professional development and a three-month mentorship program with experienced mentor-brokers. Participants who complete the class and mentorship will receive a stipend at the end of the Program.

Broker Academy graduates help increase access to trusted, accurate health coverage information, which can better health outcomes statewide. By working in their own communities, these brokers not only help people understand their health coverage options, but they also give them greater confidence in their decision to enroll in and use that coverage.

“The Broker Academy has made a meaningful impact in its first five years,” said Access Health CT Chief Executive Officer James Michel. “These brokers are strengthening connections within communities in need and providing free enrollment support. The Broker Academy is an important part of our efforts to reduce the uninsured rate and close gaps in health coverage, and we’re excited to build on that momentum with this year’s cohort.”

To participate in the Broker Academy, applicants must be 18 years old or older. They must hold a high school diploma or GED, provide at least one but no more than three letters of recommendation and have community service experience. The Program is open to all Connecticut residents, but preference will be given to applicants who reside or work in underserved areas.

AHCT is hosting free virtual Broker Academy information sessions. The remaining sessions will take place March 3 and March 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To register for a session, click here
